If you're shopping for an edible printer, the first question is usually "how much is this going to cost me?" The honest answer has two parts: what you pay up front for the printer and starter supplies, and what each printed cake costs after that. This guide covers both, with the real price of every edible ink printer bundle we sell, what's inside each one, and what you'll spend per sheet once you're printing.

Prime vs Premier vs Prestige: what the extra money buys

The home bundles come in three levels. The printer is the same at every level; what changes is how much maintenance kit and spare ink you get in the box.

Prime

Printer, 5 XL refillable edible ink cartridges, 12 frosting sheets, software and manual. Everything you need to print your first cakes.

Premier (+$100)

Adds 5 cleaning cartridges and a printhead flush system. Edible ink can dry in the nozzles when a printer sits idle between orders, and this is what clears it.

Prestige (+$70 more)

Adds 4 × 100 mL refill bottles (black, cyan, magenta, yellow). Bought separately, that set is $69.99, so Prestige is the better deal if you plan to refill.

Rule of thumb: if you'll print every week, Premier pays for itself in avoided clogs. If you'll print a lot, Prestige gives you months of ink before you reorder anything.

Which Canon printer you get, and why it changes the price

Every bundle is built on a Canon PIXMA printer, so the Canon edible printer price you pay depends mostly on which model is inside.

Canon PIXMA TS702 (Entry-Level, from $299)

A compact single-function printer. It prints edible images and nothing else, which is exactly what you want from a dedicated edible printer. It takes the PGI-280XL / CLI-281XL cartridge set.

Canon PIXMA TR8620 (Ultimate, from $399)

Adds a scanner and copier. That means you can scan a child's drawing, a printed photo or an old wedding picture and print it straight onto a frosting sheet, without a computer. It also uses the 280/281 cartridge set.

Canon PIXMA G6020 (Professional, $549.99)

Instead of small cartridges, it has refillable ink tanks you top up from 100 mL bottles. That gives the lowest ink cost per print in our range, which matters once you're printing for paying customers every day. This is the bundle we point to when someone asks about edible printer pricing for a high-volume bakery.

Canon PIXMA TS9520 (Commercial, from $599.99)

The only wide format edible printer in our range. It prints on 11 × 17 sheets, so a half-sheet cake topper prints in one piece instead of two tiled sheets.

What edible printing costs per print

After the printer, almost all of your running cost is the sheet you print on. Here's what each sheet costs at today's prices:

Sheet Pack Pack price Cost per sheet
Frosting sheets 8.5 × 11 12 sheets $16.99 $1.42
24 sheets $29.99 $1.25
72 sheets $83.99 $1.17
240 sheets $259.99 $1.08
Wide frosting sheets 11 × 17 24 sheets $52.99 $2.21
Wafer paper 0.3 mm, 50 sheets $14.99 $0.30
0.6 mm, 50 sheets $29.99 $0.60

Ink adds a little on top. A replacement edible ink cartridge is $17.99, or $84.99 for a 5-pack. Refilling is where you save: edible ink refill bottles work out to about $0.18 per mL for a single 100 mL bottle, $0.17 per mL in the 4-pack, and about $0.15 per mL in the 240 mL size. Every cartridge in our bundles is refillable.

Example: a home baker printing about 80 toppers a month on the 240-sheet pack spends roughly $87 a month on sheets (80 × $1.08), plus ink. On the 12-sheet pack, the same 80 prints would cost about $113.

Costs people forget when budgeting

  • A dedicated printer. An edible printer can never have regular ink in it, so you can't reuse your office printer. We explain why in why your edible printer must never print anything else and can you use a regular printer for edible ink?
  • Cleaning supplies. If your printer sits for a week, nozzles can dry. Cleaning cartridges ($17.99 each, $84.99 for 5) cost far less than a new printer.
  • Sheet storage. Frosting sheets dry out if left open. Keep them sealed in their bag, and buy larger packs only once you know your monthly usage.
  • Template software after 90 days. Template editing is free for the first 90 days; the photo editing software stays free for life.

The cheapest edible printer that's actually worth buying

Searches for a cheapest edible printer or a cheap edible ink printer often lead to used printers or "conversion kits". The problem is that a printer that has ever run regular ink can't be made food-safe, and a mismatched cartridge setup wastes sheets and ink. A complete bundle avoids both.

Our lowest-priced complete option is the Entry-Level Home Baker Prime bundle at $299: a new Canon TS702, 5 refillable edible cartridges and 12 frosting sheets. It's the beginner edible printer kit most first-time bakers start with. If you're comparing options, our guide to 7 edible printer buying mistakes is worth five minutes first.

Edible printer cost: common questions

How much does an edible printer cost?

A complete edible printer bundle costs $299 to $569 for home bakers, $549.99 for a refillable-tank bakery setup, and $599.99 to $649.99 for a wide-format printer that prints 11 × 17 sheets. Each bundle includes the printer, edible ink, frosting sheets and software.

What is the cheapest edible printer?

Our cheapest complete edible printer is the Entry-Level Home Baker Prime bundle at $299, with a new Canon PIXMA TS702, 5 refillable edible ink cartridges and 12 frosting sheets.

Is an edible printer starter kit worth it compared with buying separately?

For most people, yes. A bundle guarantees a printer that has never touched regular ink, cartridges that fit it, and sheets that work with it. Higher bundles also include cleaning cartridges and refill bottles at less than their separate price.

How much does edible printing cost per cake?

Most cake toppers use one 8.5 × 11 frosting sheet, which costs $1.08 to $1.42 depending on pack size, plus a small amount of ink. Wafer paper is cheaper at about $0.30 to $0.60 a sheet.

Can I use the Canon printer I already own?

Only if it's brand new and has never had regular ink installed. Once regular ink has gone through a printhead, it can't be used for food. That's why every bundle ships with a new printer.

Do I need to pay for edible printing software?

Every bundle includes 90 days of free template editing software and free lifetime photo editing software.

Can I pay for an edible printer over time?

Yes. You can choose Affirm at checkout to pay over time, subject to approval.
